About this image:
Other titles: Churchill Mohican
Location: Turf War 2003
Banksy based this image on the now infamous defacement of the Statue of Winston Churchill in Parliament Square during the Mayday riots in 2000. One of the protestors, a former soldier, daubed red paint near the mouth of the statue and (in a moment of apparent inspiration) placed a piece of grass turf on the head of the statue, giving Churchill a rather fetching green mohican which somehow seemed to suit him. A few years later, Banksy drew his own inspiration from this now iconic image, calling it “The perfect logo for this eco-punk movement that was trying to reclaim the streets, bring an end to global capitalism and defend the right to sit in a park all day getting wasted.” In response, he produced this image as a limited edition print of 750, 150 of which were signed by Banksy himself.
A large poster of this image was hung at the Turf War Exhibition, with several cut-outs of Smiley suspended on wires in formation in front of Churchill. A banner suspended beneath the poster bore the word ‘Brandalism’
